3+2 Dual Degree Program in Exercise Science and Fitness (BA/BS) and Athletic Training (MAT)

Manchester University announces the inception of a 5-year dual program leading to a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science and Fitness and a Master of Athletic Training degree (MAT).  The program will begin in the Fall, 2016 Semester.

Beginning in 2022, individuals who wish to become Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) must possess a Master’s Degree from an accredited Athletic Training education program.  Through this program, Manchester University affords individuals the opportunity to complete an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and Fitness and a Master of Athletic Training degree in just five years, including summer sessions – a process which would normally take six.

Manchester’s Master of Athletic Training degree program:

  • Has been in existence since 2010
  • Is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE)
  • Has graduates who pass the Board of Certification (BOC) examination on the first attempt.  All 25 of its graduates have passed the Board of Certification Examination on the first attempt - a 100% first-time pass rate

Here’s how the dual-degree program works:

  • Students enter Manchester University as first-year students and declare an undergraduate major in Exercise Science and Fitness – Exercise Science Concentration
  • Students then complete the requirements for this undergraduate degree on an accelerated schedule, completing 12 semester-hours of coursework each summer in addition to completing courses in the Fall, January, and Spring semesters each year
  • At the end of the students’ second year, they can choose to apply for admittance to the MAT program
  • After completing the undergraduate degree requirements in the third year, students then begin their graduate studies the following summer
  • When the requirements for the MAT are completed, students are “certification-eligible”, meaning they are eligible to take the certification examination leading to the Certified Athletic Trainer credential (ATC)
  • Students who elect not to pursue the MAT degree or are not accepted to the MAT program, have completed the undergraduate degree in three years

The advantages of this program are obvious:

  • Students complete a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in 5 years, instead of 6, thus saving 1 year of tuition
  • Students are eligible for employment as an athletic trainer 1 year earlier*
  • Both the undergraduate major and the MAT program are academically strong and demonstrate a proven record of graduate success

*Assuming successful completion of the BOC examination and meeting specific state licensure requirements.
